Smudge GP7/18

Smudge with us 2018-21
Smudge was a tricoloured sow who came to us at the end of 2018 when her companion died and her people didn’t want her to be alone. She was born in roughly 2013.
She settled well into the herd and was  a confident and happy member making the most of the large space in which they lived.
During the winter of 2020/21 she really began showing her age and became quite frail. We were quite surprised when she determinedly held on to outlive all her younger and apparently stronger companions through the winter and on into the summer to become our last remaining guinea pig. She never stopped enjoying her food and her space and especially enjoyed the grass that spring brought.
We didn’t want her to die alone after we had made the difficult decision not to take in any more guinea pigs since we no longer had access to indoor accommodation for them so we borrowed a couple of sows from a former volunteer to keep her company in her shed. She wasn’t overly enamoured with them at first but they settled into a routine and life continued as it had previously for her until she died of a bladder infection that didn’t respond well enough to antibiotics only a few weeks after her last old friend had passed away. We will miss her and all the others that went before. rfpp.
