Crystal is the smaller of the two does who survived when RHD killed their mother Strawberry and the rest of their littermates when they were just over ten weeks old. They were vaccinated as soon as we realised the disease was present but it wasn’t soon enough for the rest of them. The vaccine isn’t effective before ten weeks; there is one that can be given to younger rabbits but then it has to be done again at ten weeks. Their mother wasn’t at all healthy so she wasn’t one we would have normally wanted to vaccinate except in the face of the disease definitely being present and the babies were at risk of poor health from being exposed to her snuffles. Unfortunately we were a bit slow to realise that it was here because the first rabbits to die could all be explained without considering RHD.
Crystal and Frost will always be extra special to us because they are living for all the others as well.
We were able to give the girls a present that they really like. Hector is a black and white mini-rex buck who thinks he is boss of the world. The girls clearly appreciate this sort of self confidence as it didn’t take them long to adopt him.
They now live in one of the biggest runs on the bank and have a fine time alternating between snuggling with their toy boy and working on their diggings.
