Summer was a castor standard rex doe. She and three of her littermates came to us in October 2010 due to her owner’s poor health. She was about three years old. She was very fat and had not had much exercise ever, having been kept in a small section of an aviary only long enough for a couple of hops. She lived with her brother Autumn in one of our enclosures for years until he died at Christmas 2017. She then lived with Nutbrown and Dachs in a shed with a big enclosure. She was remarkably healthy for her age right up until Autumn died. She then had a bout of snuffles , but that quickly responded to antibiotics. She had a bad few weeks in early 2018 including some gut dysfunction but had been doing much better when she suddenly died in May 2018 without having appeared unwell still in remarkably good body condition and having eaten well the previous night. Unlike many of the mini-rexes we have lost she wasn’t bloated so we don’t think it was a digestive problem that caused her death. But she was over ten years old, so it wasn’t all that surprising really. She will of course be missed, she and Autumn were a fixture at the Sanctuary for a long time.
